AB WW2 Germans & PSC Yanks

G'day all,
as hinted at in previous posts, I have some WW2 stuff to post up. The figures have been loitering on the painting table for some time in various stages of completion, but are now finished, photographed, and in the draw.
First up some tasty AB Germans. I find AB stuff great to paint, although there was some slight mould slippage evident on these figures - could some fresh moulds be made please AB? These figures were purchased from Milicast.

I have a few Plastic Soldier Company 1/72 Yanks in the stash, came with my Battlegroup Overlord book I think, - here are three useful communications types that could be used in conjunction with my son's collection of US troops (remember to click for larger images):

Made an impulse purchase of some LOTR GW plastic Rangers the other day and they are currently on my painting table along with some 20mm WW2 British officers and some Warmodelling 15mm British Light Dragoons for the Peninsular War - who knows which will get finished next?

    1. Cheers Dux.
Nothing too fancy with the photos really,
I use an Olympus VG-160 14Megapixel compact camera, stick 'em on a homemade hill, stick a home printed sky background behind, and then crop & improve colours in a photo edit program.

    1. Thanks Brax. By "the rest" do you mean the PSC US or the other stuff I mentioned was on the painting table? Either way, don't hold your breath, I've been going pretty slowly of late :)

    2. Hi John
I have just joined your blog after seeing your AB post on The Guild. I am very impressed by the way you have painted the Germans and US. I've already looked at your helpful tutorials on the basics and wash methods (which I want to experiment with) and I wonder if you could help me. What base/highlight colours have you used for the US uniforms and equipment. I think you have got the look just right.
I am looking forward to reading through your back posts in the coming weeks.
      Thanks for the inspiring photos.

    3. G'day Mick. Glad you have found something useful on the blog. Basic colours for the US are (these are Vallejo colours): Jacket/Leggings- Khaki 988; Trousers - US Field Drab 873; Webbing - Green Grey 886; Helmet - Brown Violet 887; Boots - Flat Brown. Not sure what highlights I used, but I would have gone back over with the base colours after applying a wash & before any further highlighting. I think these figures had a Blue-Black wash. Hope that helps you :)

    4. Thanks John that's really helpful. I have used similar colours myself but the look you have achieved is much better than mine. Is the the blue-Black wash just an equal mix of the Vallejo washes and the colour highlight is the base plus white? After your second tutorial, I guess there is a stage to "remove" the gloss look on the figures? Is this by using a matte varnish.
Thanks for your help and sorry for the extra questions!

    5. I'm glad that was helpful.
Yes I use a combo of Vallejo washes, plus I have a few Secret Weapon washes which are quite good too. Try a bit of blue, umber & black in your wash mix - bit of trial and error til you get the shade that works for you. I don't create highlights by mixing in pure white, I think it works better if you mix with lighter neutrals like Stone Grey, Deck tan or German Camo Beige. Most of the gloss from the wash is lost in the over-painting - (bringing back base colour & highlights, whilst leaving wash in appropriate areas)- I do at times spray figures with Dullcoat if they still have that shiny look to them.

    6. Thanks - I'll give that a try (when my arm's out of plaster) and let you know how it went.

Look forward to hearing how your troops turn out.

  5. Solid work. What size / scale are the AB? Are they compatible with 1/72? I'm familiar with their ancients and napoleonic 18mm figs, but I've not seen bigger stuff before.

    1. Cheers FMB. Yes, can be used with 1/72 no worries - their WW2 ranges are excellent, if only Tony Barton had sculpted more....

    1. Dear Mr Beardo, your compliments are much appreciated.

How do I do that? I'm not sure myself at times. Now and then my son asks "Dad, why don't my painted miniatures look like yours?", I tell him it's because I'm an old geezer and have been painting toys since the 1970's :)

      Sincere Salutations & Felicitations,
      John
