Twas a Mighty Saxon Horde.....

G'day all,
recently finished a large commission of Anglo Saxons, all Crusader Miniatures 28mm metals. The basing and banners are to be done by my client, the shields are a combination of freehand and decals.

There were 2 x 24 figure units of fyrd, 8 x Archers, 8 x Slingers, and 24 Thegns. Here are some pics :-)

Hope you didn't mind looking at all the pictures? I wouldn't mind some of these poses in my own collection.

All the best,
John.

  2. Very nice John, great inspiration as I am working on my own Saxon theigns at the moment. I really like the subdued subtle shade you have achieved with the eyes. May I enquire as to your technique?

    1. Thanks Jonathan. I start with a base flesh wash, over which I fill the eye socket in with Reaper Brown Liner (Black Brown basically), then with an Ivory (never pure white). I usually just put a wee dot in the corners of the eye - I normally try to have the eyes looking to one side or the other as this is easier to achieve than looking straight ahead. If I muck up the edges I will touch up around the upper & lower lids with my flesh base tone. For all this work I use a Windsor & Newton Series 7 size 1 or 0. I hope this is some help.
